The Process

When I got approached to design the cover for a devotional, I was ecstatic. Book design has always been something I’ve wanted to try my hand at. It is such a unique challenge to embody however-many pages in a single cohesive image, and I was up for it.

Working with Jody and his editor Joel was a great experience. We had an initial call to talk all about the themes, writing process, and their hopes for the reader. After that, we had regular follow-up calls to talk through initial concepts, review refinements, and make final touches.

This devotional would cover the biblical story of the Mount of Transfiguration, found primarily in Matthew’s gospel. Jody wanted to emphasize not only the height of the mysterious moment at the peak, but the way that moment continues to form those who were there even after they climb back down to sea level and go about their everyday lives. Developing visual language that spoke to that lasting impact element was a fun challenge.

By the time this project had wrapped up, I felt confident that the cover design we ultimately landed on reflected Jody’s heart for his local Arkansas congregation.
